O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when she was in high school. She made it to the top ten spots because of the judges' enthusiasm about the performance. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked by this and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa, who had the best singing abilities. O'Neil, who had been consistently giving stellar performances since then, never fell below the top three. Judge Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner of the Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially made public by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
